Three numbers decide whether a portable speaker suits you, and all three are routinely misread. The IP rating is a lab test with specific limits, the battery figure is measured at a volume nobody uses, and the wattage on the box is often a peak number that says almost nothing about loudness. Here is how to read each one from a specification sheet.
IP ratings, decoded
An IP code has two digits. The first is protection against solids, on a scale from 0 to 6, where 5 means dust protected and 6 means dust tight. The first digit is replaced by an X when the manufacturer did not test for it, which is why so many speakers are IPX7 rather than IP67.
The second digit is water, and this is the one that matters:
- IPX4 splashing from any direction. Rain and poolside spray, not submersion.
- IPX5 a low pressure jet from any direction. A hose, briefly.
- IPX6 a powerful jet. Heavy rain, wave splash on a boat.
- IPX7 immersion in one meter of water for 30 minutes.
- IPX8 continuous immersion beyond one meter, to a depth the manufacturer states.
Two things the ratings do not cover. They are tested in fresh water, so salt water and chlorinated pool water are outside the certification, and rinsing with fresh water afterward is the manufacturer’s usual instruction. And the seals age. A three year old IPX7 speaker with a worn charging port cover is not still IPX7.
In practice, look for at least IPX5 for any outdoor use and IPX7 if the speaker will be anywhere near a pool. The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 lists waterproof, dustproof and shockproof protection in a 1.21 pound cylinder, and the JBL Flip 6 is listed as waterproof with a stated 12 hour battery. The W-KING X10 is specified as IPX6, which is the rain and splash tier rather than the submersion tier.
Battery figures and what they are measured at
Manufacturers quote playtime at a moderate volume, frequently around 50 percent, with any lighting turned off and no extras running. That is a legitimate test condition and it is nowhere near how a party gets used. Expect roughly half the quoted figure at high volume, and less again if the speaker has an LED ring running.
The listings vary widely. The Tronsmart Mirtune S100 quotes 20 hours from an 8,000 mAh cell with a 4.5 hour charge time, which is a coherent set of numbers. The Bose SoundLink Revolve+ II quotes 16 hours of battery life and a 17 hour charge time, which is almost certainly a data entry error rather than a real specification, since no manufacturer designs a speaker that charges more slowly than it plays.
The SOWO Q18 listing gives 16 hours of playback and a 3 hour charge, then records the battery capacity as 18 amp hours, which would be an enormous cell for a 1 pound speaker. When a spec block contradicts itself like that, the playtime figure is the one more likely to have come from the manufacturer.
Two features worth having: USB-C charging, now standard, and power bank output, which lets the speaker charge a phone. The W-KING X10 lists a power bank function, which is genuinely useful on a camping trip and quietly halves your playtime if you use it.
Wattage, and why it barely predicts loudness
Watts measure electrical power going into the drivers, not sound coming out. Two speakers with identical wattage can differ by 6 decibels in output if their drivers differ in efficiency, and 6 decibels is a large difference. Worse, the number is often quoted as peak rather than RMS. Peak is a momentary maximum the amplifier can reach for a fraction of a second. RMS is continuous output the speaker can actually sustain.
The W-KING X10 listing is unusually honest about this, quoting 70 watts RMS and 120 watts peak for a single unit and 240 watts peak in a stereo pair. Many competing listings quote only the peak figure. When you see a small speaker claiming a large wattage, look for RMS, and if it is not published, assume the number is peak.
Two better proxies for loudness. First, driver count and size: the Tronsmart Bang Max is a 13.18 pound cabinet 18 inches wide, and that mass and volume tell you more about its output than the wattage does. Second, passive radiators, which extend low frequency output without extra amplifier power; the X10 lists three of them.

Size classes in practice
The pocket class runs under a pound and is about convenience rather than output. The Bose SoundLink Micro is listed at 10.2 ounces in a 3.9 inch square body with a stated 6 hour battery, and its listing also records it as discontinued by the manufacturer, which is worth knowing before you plan around long term support.
The one to two pound class is where most buyers land, covering the Wonderboom 4 and the Flip 6. It is loud enough for a picnic table, small enough for a bag, and rugged enough for the outdoors. Some models in this class, including the Altec Lansing Baby Boom XL, are built specifically around outdoor durability.
Above five pounds you are buying output, not portability. If the speaker will mostly live on a shelf and only occasionally move, a mains powered design removes the battery compromise entirely. The Marshall Acton III is listed as corded electric with a 4 inch woofer and a 0.75 inch tweeter, which is a real two way design rather than a single full range driver.
The specifications that are usually noise
Bluetooth range figures assume open air with no obstruction, so a stated 33 feet and a stated 100 feet will both give you roughly one room through a wall. Frequency response numbers without a tolerance in decibels are unfalsifiable. Codec support matters less than most buyers think for a speaker used outdoors, where wind and ambient noise dominate any codec difference.
What does matter: stereo pairing support if you might buy a second unit, physical buttons that work with wet hands, and a charging port cover that is captive rather than a loose plug. When you compare candidates, sort the portable Bluetooth speaker listings by weight and water rating first, and treat the wattage claims as the last tiebreaker rather than the first filter.
