A headset for calls is judged by how you sound to other people, which is the opposite of how music headphones are judged. That single difference explains most of the design decisions in the category, including several that look like downgrades on paper. If you are buying for meetings rather than listening, here is what the specification sheet is actually telling you.
The microphone is the product
On a call, the far end hears only what your microphone captures. Everything else, driver size, codec, frequency range, affects your experience alone. So the first questions are about the microphone: where it sits, how it rejects the room, and whether the boom is positionable.
A boom arm places the capsule a fixed short distance from the mouth. That proximity is worth more than any processing, because the level difference between your voice and the room grows with every inch closer to the source. It is why business headsets still use booms in an era when earbuds fit four microphones in a stem.
Noise rejection on the transmit side is a separate feature from the noise cancellation you hear, and the two are routinely confused in listings. A headset can cancel noise for the far end while doing nothing for you, or the reverse. Jabra records passive noise cancellation on the Evolve 65 MS and active noise cancellation on the Evolve 65 SE, but neither row tells you which direction the feature points.
Why call headsets have narrow frequency ranges
The Evolve 65 SE listing states a frequency range of 100 Hz to 10 kHz. Next to a music headphone claiming 20 Hz to 40 kHz, that looks like a much weaker product. It is not. Traditional telephony carried roughly 300 Hz to 3.4 kHz, and modern wideband voice codecs extend to about 7 kHz. A headset tuned to the voice band is putting its output where speech intelligibility lives and deliberately not wasting amplifier power below it.
That tuning is a real trade, though. A headset optimized for speech is a compromise for music, which matters if you want one device for both. Products that try to serve both jobs usually carry a full range specification: the Evolve 65 MS lists 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and Poly positions the Voyager Focus 2 UC as a unified communications headset that ships with a charging stand.
Connection type decides reliability
Three arrangements dominate, and they are not interchangeable.

Wired remains the most reliable option and the cheapest to run. Dell specifies the Pro Headset WH3022 as a USB-A wired unit at 3.36 ounces with call control on the cable and no battery at all. Its spec table oddly lists the specific use as gaming, which does not match a business headset with call control keys, so read the physical description rather than the category rows.
The adapter approach is what most enterprise wireless headsets use. Jabra ships a dongle with the Evolve 65 SE and lists a 30 meter range, and the Evolve 65 MS combines Bluetooth with NFC and a USB connection. That combination is what lets a headset hold a computer link and a phone link at the same time.
Desk phone systems are a separate world again. The Plantron CS540 is sold with a handset lifter, weighs 0.741 ounces and is rated at 7 hours, which is the classic profile for a DECT desk headset. The imported spec table lists its wireless technology as Bluetooth, which conflicts with the lifter and base station design, so treat that field as unreliable.
Battery, weight and the all-day question
For a full working day, a headset needs either enough battery for eight hours of talk time or a stand that charges it between calls. The Evolve 65 MS is rated at 14 hours and the Evolve 65 SE at 12, both of which clear a normal day. The Voyager Focus 2 UC solves it the other way, with a stand that makes topping up automatic rather than remembered.
Weight matters more here than in any other headphone category, because the device is worn for hours rather than for an album. A wired unit like the WH3022 avoids carrying a cell at all, which is part of why it is light. Anything over about 10 ounces will be noticed by the afternoon.
Watch the battery rows for import errors. The Evolve 65 MS listing gives a 14 hour battery and a 14 hour charging time, which is a duplicated field rather than a real charging figure.
Model suffixes are not decoration
Business headsets ship in variants that look identical and behave differently. The MS suffix on the Evolve 65 MS and the UC in Voyager Focus 2 UC are the clearest example: MS variants are configured and certified for Microsoft’s calling platform, while UC variants are set up for general unified communications software. The hardware is largely the same. The firmware, the default button behavior and the bundled adapter’s pairing mode are not.
This matters because the physical controls only work if the headset and the software agree. Answering a call from the earcup, muting from the headset, and having the far end see you as muted all depend on the headset speaking the right control protocol to the right application. When those signals do not match, you get the common failure where the headset thinks it is muted and the meeting does not.
Two features are worth looking for by name, and they are usually buried in the description rather than the spec table. A physical mute, ideally one that works by lifting the boom, is faster and more certain than a software toggle. A busy light on the outside of the earcup tells people nearby that you are in a call, which is the reason so many office headsets have one. Neither appears in a driver or battery row, so read the feature list.
What about gaming and general purpose headsets
Gaming headsets share the boom microphone but optimize for latency and for wearing comfort during long sessions. Audeze lists a detachable cable and Bluetooth 5.0 on the Penrose, aimed at consoles and PCs. The listing states 80 hours of battery, which sits far above what the rest of the wireless gaming field claims, so treat it as a listing figure rather than a settled number.
Consumer headphones with a built-in microphone are a reasonable compromise if calls are occasional. PowerLocus lists a built-in microphone and multipoint pairing on the P2, and Sony pitches the WH-CH710N with a microphone for phone calls. Neither has a boom, so your voice is captured from the side of your head with the room mixed in.
If calls are most of your day, start in the headsets category and treat a boom, a wired or adapter connection, and a stated all-day battery as the requirements. If they are a small part of it, a comfortable pair from the on-ear headphones category with a decent microphone will serve, and you get a headphone that also works for music.
