Bluetooth version numbers appear on almost every headphone listing and explain almost nothing on their own. The version tells you which specification the radio chip claims to implement. It does not tell you which optional features the manufacturer chose to enable, which codecs are supported, or whether the pair can hold two connections at once. Here is what the number actually governs, and what to look for instead.
What a version number does and does not promise
Each Bluetooth release adds capabilities to the specification, but nearly all of them are optional for the device maker. A product can ship a Bluetooth 5.4 radio and support none of the features people associate with 5.x. Conversely, an older radio can support multipoint, because multipoint has existed for many generations.
The version does set a floor on a few things. From 5.0 onward, the low energy radio gained more range and throughput. Bluetooth 5.2 introduced the LE Audio framework and the LC3 codec, which underpin Auracast broadcast audio, and 5.3 and 5.4 refined power management and periodic advertising. If a feature you want depends on LE Audio, a pre-5.2 radio cannot provide it. That is close to the whole practical content of the version number.
You can see how loose the coupling is across real listings. Xiaomi advertises LDAC and certified high resolution audio on the Redmi Buds 5 Pro while its spec table records Bluetooth 5.0, and TOZO lists Bluetooth 5.4 on the HA1 alongside a 78 millisecond latency figure. The codec and the latency are the useful facts in both cases. The version is background.
Multipoint: the feature that actually changes your day
Multipoint means the headphone maintains active links to two host devices at the same time, typically a laptop and a phone, and switches audio to whichever one demands it. Without it, you disconnect from one device and pair with the other every time a call arrives.
This is the single most useful feature in the list for anyone who works at a desk and carries a phone, and it is also the least consistently advertised. PowerLocus states multipoint pairing outright in the special features of the P2, which is unusually direct labeling. Business headsets normally implement it as a matter of course: Jabra pairs Bluetooth with NFC and a USB adapter on the Evolve 65 MS, and ships a dongle with the Evolve 65 SE, which is the standard arrangement for holding a computer link and a phone link together.
Two cautions. Multipoint is usually limited to two devices, not three. And on many models, enabling it disables the highest quality codec, because the radio no longer has the bandwidth budget to spare.
Codecs matter more than versions
Every Bluetooth audio link compresses. SBC is the mandatory baseline that all devices support. AAC is common on Apple hardware. Qualcomm’s aptX family and Sony’s LDAC push higher bit rates, and LDAC in particular is the one that appears on listings claiming high resolution wireless audio.
The catch is that both ends must support the same codec. An LDAC headphone paired with a phone that only offers SBC and AAC will run at AAC, and the box will still say LDAC. If you want to know what a chain can actually do, check the source device as carefully as the headphone. On the desktop side, FiiO lists LDAC, aptX Adaptive and aptX HD support on the K9 Pro, which is the kind of explicit codec list worth looking for.
Latency, and why gaming listings talk about it
Compression, buffering and transmission all add delay between the source and your ear. Under about 100 milliseconds, most people stop noticing lip sync error on video. Above it, video becomes annoying and gaming becomes unplayable.
This is why low latency modes appear as named features. JVC lists a low latency mode for gaming and movies on the HA-A30T with Bluetooth 5.2. Xiaomi publishes a 49 millisecond audio latency figure for the Redmi Buds 5 Pro. Some designs abandon standard Bluetooth for the audio path entirely: AIAIAI markets the TMA-2 Studio Wireless+ on ultra low latency for studio work, and Sennheiser uses a separate RF link rather than Bluetooth on the RS 175 home system for the same reason.
Why the connection drops, and what to do about it
Bluetooth shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi, microwave ovens, wireless keyboards and a long list of other hardware. In a crowded apartment building or an open plan office, that band is congested, and the radio spends part of its time hopping around interference. Dropouts in those places are not a defect in the headphone.
The human body is the other common cause. Water absorbs 2.4 GHz energy well, so a phone in a back pocket puts your torso between the transmitter and the receiver on the opposite side of your head. Moving the phone to a front pocket or the other side of your body often fixes a stutter that no firmware update would.
Stored pairings are worth managing too. Devices keep a list of previously paired hosts, and a headphone that keeps grabbing a tablet in the next room is doing exactly what it was told. Clearing old pairings from both ends is the first troubleshooting step, ahead of resetting anything.
Where a stable link is non-negotiable, some products avoid the problem instead of managing it. A dedicated USB adapter creates a private link on a channel the manufacturer controls, and dedicated RF systems for television leave the Bluetooth band entirely, which is the design logic behind the RS 175 approach.

Where listings go wrong
Range figures are the least reliable row in the block. Jabra’s Evolve 65 MS listing pairs Bluetooth 3.0 with a stated 100 meter range, a combination that only makes sense if the figure describes the bundled USB adapter rather than the headset radio. Elsewhere the range fields are simply notation artifacts, printing 1E+1 or 3E+1 meters where the source data meant 10 or 30. Any wireless range number assumes clear line of sight, and a wall, a body or a crowded office cuts it sharply.
Version numbers also drift within one product family. The Sony WH-1000XM3 lists Bluetooth 5.0, which was current when it launched, and it remains perfectly usable now. A newer number on a competing box does not make the older radio stop working.
What to do with all this
Decide which of the four features you actually need, then check for that feature by name rather than by version number. If you split time between a laptop and a phone, search the over-ear headphones category for multipoint stated explicitly. If you watch video on the same pair, look for a stated latency figure or a named low latency mode. If you care about codecs, confirm support on both ends of the link. And if none of those apply, the version number can be safely ignored.
