Powered PA Speakers for Small Venues: Matching Size to Audience

Choosing a powered PA speaker is mostly a matter of matching three things: how many people are in the room, what you are putting through it, and how far the box has to throw. Wattage figures on a marketing panel answer none of those questions on their own, because a peak rating and a continuous rating can differ by a factor of four and manufacturers are not consistent about which one they print largest.

Start with the source, not the speaker

Speech is the easy case. A single voice occupies a narrow band, needs no low frequency extension below about 100 Hz, and rarely demands high sound pressure. An acoustic duo is harder. A full band with drums, or a DJ set, is a different job entirely, because kick drum and bass content is where nearly all the power goes.

Run the numbers the other way and it becomes obvious. Getting 3 dB more output requires double the amplifier power. Adding the bottom octave to a system can easily cost you 10 dB of headroom in the low frequencies alone. That is why a box which sounds generous for a presentation runs out of composure the moment a kick drum arrives.

Real products line up with this. Mackie specifies the SRM150 at 150 watts through a 5.25 inch driver, weighing 7.6 pounds, with a built in mixer and a socket for mounting on a microphone stand. That is a tabletop and small room tool, and its size is the honest signal of what it is for.

Step up and the Behringer Eurolive B210D is listed as a 200 watt two way active cabinet with XLR and line level inputs, weighing 19.18 pounds. That is a one person carry, which matters more than it sounds when you are loading in alone.

At the top of what a small venue rig needs, PreSonus publishes the CDL12P with a 12 inch woofer, a 2 inch tweeter, a 1000 watt rating, integrated flyware, and a 35 millimeter pole socket with a 7.5 degree downward tilt. The listed weight of 71 pounds is the part people underestimate. A speaker you cannot lift onto a pole by yourself is not a speaker you will use.

That 7.5 degree tilt is not a detail

A pole mounted speaker aimed dead level fires most of its energy over the heads of the front rows and into the back wall, where it becomes reflection rather than intelligibility. A built in downward tilt puts the direct sound onto the audience instead. If your cabinet does not have one, a tilting pole adapter does the same job. Getting this right improves clarity more than any equalizer setting.

Height follows the same logic. Speakers on the floor are absorbed by the first two rows of bodies. Get the drivers above head height and coverage evens out across the room.

One more figure worth checking is the horizontal coverage angle, usually printed as something like 90 degrees by 60 degrees. That first number tells you how wide a fan of audience one box can serve at a given distance. A narrow box aimed down the middle of a wide room leaves the outer seats with reflections rather than direct sound, and no amount of extra power fixes a coverage pattern that does not reach them.

Powered or passive

A powered cabinet contains an amplifier matched to its own drivers, plus protection and crossover processing tuned by the manufacturer. You carry one power cable and one signal cable per box, and there is no way to mismatch the amplifier to the speaker. That is why the powered cabinets category is where most small venue rigs now start.

Passive systems still make sense when you already own cabinets or when you need one amplifier feeding several boxes. Behringer specifies the KM750 as a 750 watt stereo power amplifier across two channels, which is the shape of a traditional rack based rig. The tradeoff is that you now own the responsibility for matching impedance and power to the cabinets.

Gain before feedback is set by geometry, not by the mixer. The main speakers must be physically in front of the microphones, never behind or level with them. In each case the acoustic specifications look plausible while the surrounding fields clearly came from a template.

The figures worth trusting are the ones a manufacturer repeats in its own documentation: driver diameter, weight, connector types, and continuous power. If you can only check three things before buying, check the driver size against the table above, check the weight against what you can carry, and check that the box has the input connector your mixer actually outputs.
