How to Connect a Soundbar to a TV: HDMI eARC, Optical or Bluetooth

Three connections dominate soundbar installation, and they are not interchangeable. HDMI eARC carries the most audio and the fewest headaches, optical is the reliable fallback with a hard format ceiling, and Bluetooth is for music from a phone rather than for watching television. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason a capable bar sounds ordinary.

HDMI ARC and eARC

ARC stands for Audio Return Channel. Normally HDMI sends audio and video from a source to the television. ARC reverses the audio direction on one specific HDMI port so the television can send its sound back down the same cable to a soundbar. That single cable also carries CEC control data, which is why the TV remote can usually change soundbar volume once ARC is running.

eARC is the enhanced version introduced with HDMI 2.1. The bandwidth difference is the whole story. Standard ARC has enough throughput for compressed formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS. eARC has enough for uncompressed multichannel PCM and for the object based formats in their full versions, including Dolby TrueHD and the Dolby Atmos layer carried inside it.

Two practical rules follow. First, the port matters: only one HDMI port on a television is wired for ARC or eARC, and it is labeled. Second, the cable matters for eARC: use a High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, not a decade old one. Bars that ship a cable in the box, like the Hisense AX3120G, save you a guess, and that model needs the bandwidth because its listing specifies Dolby Atmos encoding on a 3.1.2 configuration.

Optical, the reliable fallback

Optical, also called TOSLINK or S/PDIF, sends audio as light down a plastic fiber. It is immune to electrical interference, it works with televisions too old to have ARC, and it fails in an obvious way rather than a subtle one. Its limit is fixed: optical carries two channels of uncompressed PCM, or compressed 5.1 in Dolby Digital and DTS. It cannot carry Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, or full fat Atmos.

For a large share of setups that ceiling never gets reached. Broadcast television, most streaming apps on older TVs, and cable boxes deliver Dolby Digital 5.1 at most. The LG S40TR ships an optical cable in the box alongside its rear speaker cable, and the ZVOX AV157 lists optical as its connectivity protocol with infrared remote control, no HDMI involved.

The one thing optical will not do is pass volume control from the TV remote. You will be using two remotes, or teaching one to control both.

Bluetooth, and why it is not a TV connection

Almost every current bar has Bluetooth. It is excellent for playing music from a phone and poor for watching video, for one reason: latency. Bluetooth encodes, transmits, buffers and decodes, and that round trip typically lands somewhere between 100 and 250 milliseconds depending on the codec. Lip sync error becomes visible to most people well below 100 milliseconds.

Some televisions and bars implement lip sync correction that delays the picture to match. When it works it works well. When it does not, you cannot fix it from the bar. Treat Bluetooth as the music input and use HDMI or optical for the television, even on bars where the listing makes a lot of the wireless connectivity, such as the Yamaha SR-C20A with its stated 10 meter Bluetooth range.

Setting it up without the usual pain

  • Use the labeled port. Connect the bar to the HDMI socket marked ARC or eARC. Any other port will pass video into the TV but will not send audio back out.
  • Turn CEC on, by its brand name. Manufacturers rename it: Anynet+ on Samsung, Simplink on LG, Bravia Sync on Sony, Viera Link on Panasonic. Without it the handshake often half completes.
  • Set the TV audio output correctly. Switch the digital audio output from PCM to Bitstream or Auto if you want the bar to decode Dolby or DTS. Leaving it on PCM downmixes everything to two channels, which quietly cancels the surround capability of a system like the TCL Q6510 and its 5.1 speaker package.
  • Disable the TV speakers. Some sets keep them on and the mix of the two sources smears dialogue.
  • Check for a passthrough advantage. Bars with an HDMI input, rather than only an output, can take a console or streaming box directly and pass video onward to the TV. That path avoids the television’s audio processing entirely.

Three failures and what causes them

No sound at all over ARC almost always means CEC is disabled on one end, or the cable is in a port that is not the ARC port. Sound that cuts out for a second when the source changes format is the handshake renegotiating, and it is normal on standard ARC. Surround content playing as stereo means the television is downmixing, which is the PCM setting described above rather than a fault in the bar.

A fourth case is worth naming because it looks like a defect: some televisions will not pass DTS at all over ARC, regardless of what the bar supports, because the set never licensed DTS decoding. Connecting the source directly to a bar with an HDMI input, or falling back to optical from the source itself, routes around that limitation.

When the TV and the bar are the same brand

Several manufacturers add proprietary features on top of ARC that only work within their own ecosystem. The Samsung HW-Q910C supports Q-Symphony, which uses the television’s own speakers as additional height and width channels alongside the bar rather than muting them. Features like this are worth checking before you mix brands, because they can meaningfully change what the system does.

If a bar is not the right shape for your room

HDMI ARC is not exclusive to soundbars. Compact amplifiers increasingly carry it, which lets a pair of passive speakers replace the bar entirely while keeping the single cable convenience. The Arylic B50 is one example, listed with HDMI ARC and aptX HD Bluetooth in a small chassis. At the other end of the scale, a full receiver such as the Onkyo TX-RZ50 handles multiple HDMI sources, room correction and discrete amplification for every channel, at the cost of a component rack.

Whichever route you take, confirm the connection before you compare sound. Browse the soundbar listings or the amplifier listings with the input list open, because a bar that cannot receive the format your source sends will never show you what it can do.
