Do You Need a Separate Subwoofer With a Soundbar?

The short answer is that it depends on what a “built-in subwoofer” actually is on the bar you are looking at. Some bars carry a bass driver the size of a soda can. Others ship a separate cabinet with a driver five times the cone area. The label on the box does not distinguish between them, so the specification sheet has to.

What a subwoofer is doing that a bar cannot

Bass output is a function of how much air a driver can move, which is cone area multiplied by how far the cone travels. A slim bar cabinet limits both. It is typically 2 to 4 inches deep, which caps the enclosure volume, and the drivers have to fit inside that depth. There is no processing trick that undoes the physics. A soundbar can be tuned to sound fuller, and it can use passive radiators to extend a little lower, but it cannot pressurize a room the way a 10 or 12 inch driver in a 30 pound box can.

The practical dividing line sits somewhere around 60 Hz. Most bars can produce sound below that; few can produce it at a level that stays in balance with the rest of the mix at normal listening volume. That range holds movie explosions, the low end of a kick drum, and the rumble under a score.

Read the driver diameter, not the label

Retail listings usually publish a subwoofer diameter field, and it is the single most informative number in the whole spec block. The Yamaha SR-C20A is listed with a 3 inch built-in subwoofer driver. The Hisense HS5100 is listed with a 6.5 inch subwoofer in a separate wireless cabinet. A 6.5 inch cone has roughly four and a half times the surface area of a 3 inch cone before you account for the larger enclosure behind it.

Some bars do not publish a driver size for the built-in bass at all. The Samsung HW-T400 listing describes a built-in woofer and a 2.0 configuration in the same spec block, which is a contradiction worth noticing: 2.0 means no dedicated subwoofer channel, so the woofer in question is a mid-bass driver doing double duty, not a subwoofer in the surround sound sense.

Built-in bass done seriously

Not every all-in-one bar is a compromise. The Yamaha SR-B30A is listed with built-in subwoofers, plural, in a 36 inch cabinet weighing 8.6 pounds, and its encoding list includes Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 7.1. The Hisense A620 is a 2.1 design with the bass section inside a 31.5 inch bar. Designs like these trade absolute low frequency extension for having exactly one box to place and one cable to run.

That trade makes sense in three situations: apartments where deep bass through the floor is a genuine problem, rooms under roughly 150 square feet where a large sub would overload the space, and setups where there is simply nowhere to put another cabinet.

Where a separate subwoofer earns its place

Once you can put a box on the floor, a separate sub changes two things at once. It adds output, and it lets you place the bass source independently of the screen. Room modes mean that bass level at your seat can vary by 10 decibels or more depending on where the cabinet sits, so being able to move it is worth as much as the extra cone area.

The VIZIO V-Series V21x-J8 is a 2.1 package with a wireless subwoofer listed at 4.5 inches, which is at the small end of separate subs but still a free standing cabinet you can move. Step up and the difference is obvious in the spec sheet: the Klipsch Flexus SUB 100 is a 10 inch driver in a 28 pound cabinet, sold as an add-on for Klipsch Flexus bars rather than as part of a bundle.

Adding a sub to a bar you already own

This is where most people get stuck, because soundbars do not agree on how bass gets out of the bar. There are three common paths.

  • A matched wireless sub from the same brand. The cleanest option and usually the only one a slim bar supports. The Klipsch Flexus CORE 100 is designed around exactly this: the bar is sold on its own, and the matching subwoofer connects over the brand’s own wireless link.
  • A subwoofer output jack on the bar. Less common on slim bars, standard on receivers. If the bar has an RCA subwoofer output, any powered subwoofer with a line level input will work, including models sold for two channel systems.
  • No path at all. Plenty of bars have neither a wireless pairing mode for third party subs nor a sub output. In that case the honest answer is that you cannot add one, and replacing the bar is the only route.

Check for the jack or the pairing mode before you buy a subwoofer. A generic powered sub like the Klipsch R-12SW, a 12 inch model whose listing quotes wired RCA connectivity, is a fine partner for a receiver or an amplifier with a sub output and no use at all to a bar that has neither.

When the answer is no

If your complaint about TV audio is that you cannot follow dialogue, a subwoofer is the wrong purchase. Speech lives between roughly 300 Hz and 3 kHz, nowhere near subwoofer territory, and adding low end can actually make intelligibility worse by masking the lower midrange. A bar built around speech is the better answer there. The ZVOX AV157 is built around dialogue processing and is listed as 2.1 with a 3 inch bass driver and optical connectivity, with no separate subwoofer in the package at all.

Volume complaints are also often a power problem rather than a bass problem, and level matching between channels solves more than a new cabinet does.

How to decide in two minutes

Look up the subwoofer diameter on the bar you own or are considering. If it is under about 4 inches and the room is larger than a bedroom, a separate sub will be the biggest single improvement available to you. If the bar already ships with a separate cabinet of 5 inches or more, spend the money on placement experiments and level trim before you buy anything else. If dialogue is the issue, skip the sub entirely.

When you are ready to compare hardware, work through the subwoofer listings by driver diameter and connection type, and cross check against the soundbar listings to confirm the bar can actually talk to what you are buying.
