The practical cost is a routine. You have to remember the case, keep it charged, and accept that the pair is only as usable as its smallest battery. The practical benefit is that nothing touches your neck or catches on a collar, which is why the format now dominates the earbud headphones category.

There is a second cost that listings never mention. Two buds with independent batteries age at slightly different rates and can be lost independently. Skullcandy publishes 9 hours per bud and 33 hours of case reserve for the Rail wireless earbuds, but no manufacturer publishes a figure for how the two cells track each other after a year of charge cycles. If one bud starts dying early, the pair is finished.

Joined designs: one battery, fewer things to lose

Neckbands and clip-on pairs solve the losing problem by tying the earpieces together and running both from a single cell.
